A Day in Mai Chau, Vietnam

22/04/26 I had a one-day trip to Mai Chau, and honestly, it felt too short.
Just getting there from Hanoi or Ninh Binh takes time, so I’d recommend staying at least one night if you can.
Mai Chau is a beautiful area set in a vast valley surrounded by mountains. The entire landscape is covered in green - wide open rice fields, small villages, and traditional wooden houses scattered throughout.

Most of the locals are actually of Thai descent, along with other Vietnamese minorities. You can feel that this is a place where people still live simply and work the land.
The day I arrived, it was foggy, which made everything even more beautiful. Low clouds wrapped around the mountains, creating a soft, almost unreal atmosphere. The breeze and weather were perfect - calm, fresh, and quiet.
Almost every homestay in the villages offers bicycles, and riding through the valley is probably the best way to experience the place. You can just move slowly between rice fields, houses, and open land without any rush.
It rained a bit that day, and there were dragonflies everywhere. Something about that combination — light rain, mist, and the movement of the dragonflies. It gave the valley a very special feeling.
What I liked the most was the quiet. There were moments where everything felt still. The only thing that occasionally broke the silence was groups of tourists passing through, but most of the time, it remained peaceful and grounded.
There isn’t much to do in Mai Chau, and that’s exactly the point. It’s not about activities. It’s about being there. Experiencing nature, the local atmosphere, and the simplicity of life around you.
